WOODIE TIMES

John Lee, the editor of Woodie Times, invites all members to contribute stories, news and event notices for publication in the club magazine. Of particular interest are historic articles on particular makes and models, woodie body builders or an "auto-biography" of your own woodie. Articles, photos, ads, event notices and editorial contributions may be sent by postal mail or e-mail to the addresses listed below.

A set of photos for a photo feature should include 3/4 front and 3/4 rear views of the woodie from both sides, an open tailgate view, interior and close-up detail of the woodwork. Additional photos might illustrate different seating/cargo arrangements and details such as unique handles, taillights, bumpers, etc. Photos of the woodie before and during restoration or rebuild also add interest.

For the front cover of Woodie Times preference is given to vertical format photos that can be run full-bleed with a place at the top for the WT logo. When using a 35mm camera, turn the camera 90 degrees to make the vertical dimension predominant. The trouble is, woodies are horizontal objects, so achieving good vertical composition requires some creativity. One way is to include an object with a vertical element in the background. Look at the covers on the Cover Gallery page for cover photo ideas. Photographing the vehicle at a sharper 3/4 front or rear angle, or shooting from a higher angle (standing on a five-gallon bucket gives needed elevation) will help get it into the vertical format. Also, remember, you don't need the entire vehicle in the photo.

The rear view is often the one that emphasizes the woodie's unique style, so the Woodie Times likes to run rear views on the back cover.

All photos should be technically excellent. Digital photos must be high resolution, at least 300 ppi at the printing size, which would be 8.5 in. wide for an overall view or 4 in. wide for a detail shot. Color slides and glossy color prints are also fine. When having color film developed, order the 4x6 prints so the entire negative gets printed; standard prints cut off about 8% of the picture. Consider having an especially good photo enlarged to 5x7 or 8x12. Photos that illustrate a story or article on your woodie or a particular make or model is preferred. Lone photos are seldom used.

Spend some time to find a good location to photograph your woodie, and try different arrangements to get the best composition. Be sure to focus precisely, and bracket your film shots to achieve the correct exposure and color quality.

Good shooting!
